Interactive: ARP resolution walkthrough

ARP is a tiny protocol with a huge debugging payoff. When a host has an IPv4 destination but lacks a Layer 2 mapping for the next hop, it broadcasts a request. The target or gateway responds, the host caches the result, and the next frame can be sent without repeating the broadcast until the entry expires or changes.
